The name of this Belgian hip-hop and electronic artist is verlan for "maestro". If you listen to one song, choose Formidable, which is about a drunk man who's just split up from his girlfriend. The refrain is "tu étais forminable, jétais fort minable" - "you were brilliant, I was pitiful".
A collective of five anonymous musicians whose fusion of rap, electronica, rock and slam poetry is apparently taking young French people by storm. Fauve means wild animal or wild thing, and their music appeals primarily to residents of France's dysfunctional banlieues. In Blizzard, we're told "le plus important n'est pas ce que tu es, mais ce que tu as choisi d'être" - the most important thing is not what you are, but what you have chosen to be.
This is French urban pop with a lot in common with Rihanna. My favourite song is Maintenant ou jamais, which has the refrain:
Tout ce temps, j'ai envie d'y croire
Tout l'temps, même sans rien avoir
Pourtant, tout pousse à croire
C'est maintenant ou jamais
All this time, I want to believe
All the time, even without having anything
Yet, everything leads us to believe
It's now or never
Last year's maiden solo album, Subliminal, from rapper Maître Gims reached #2 in France and #1 in Belgium. The style is lyrical rap and hip-hop. In J'me tire, we get to see some contractions that we never see in class:
J'me tire, m'demande pas pourquoi j'suis parti sans motif,
Parfois j'sens mon coeur qui s'endurcit,
C'est triste à dire mais plus rien n'm'attriste,
Laisse-moi partir loin 'ici
I withdraw, I wonder why I left without a reason,
Sometimes I feel my heart harden,
It's sad to say but nothing makes me sad,
Let me leave far from here
The songs are in English, but this French turntable duo are definitely worthy of mention. Delta is the song I like best.
What's your favourite French song?
